Another Angel in Heaven

Today I lost my beautiful daughter Deb after her long and hard fought battle with acute myeloid leukemia.  Deb passed away peacefully this afternoon at home.  I will miss her with all my heart, but along with my sadness I feel relief that her suffering is now behind her.  My daughter Chris and son-in-law Andy join me in giving thanks to all who have supported us with love and encouragement over the past two years.

My heart is broken that Deb has moved on. I first met her at the beginning of her bike advocacy career in the late 90’s. She was bound and determined to get bike racks on the Marin County buses. She was a force to be reckoned with! I am humbled by her most recent difficult journey, but I know that the world is a better place because of her amazing work. I now know where her amazing came from….her amazing mother. I am sending you peace and light and will never forget Deb.

Dear Andy, Mary Lou & Chris,

Bless you all, for the love and strength you gave to Deb, so she could Fly.
She is light as a Feather, now, forever remembered for her own strength and love which she left with you. Forever with you, along with that beautiful, glorious smile…..the silver-lining behind the clouds of a magnificent blue sky!

Sweet Eternal Rest, Deb. Peace to all loved ones and friends.

Mary Lou and Andy, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your steadfast and loving care of dear Deb, sustaining and soothing her on her difficult journey. She is one with Nature now, and from the earth and her waters and the depths of air, if we listen we shall hear her dancing voice. I can imagine the wind giving you a whispering hug — that will be Deb telling you that the time has now come to take care of yourselves and to have a long, long rest.

  7. Linda Presley says:

Mary Lou, Andy, Chris and Jack. There are no words that can truly ease the pain of a loss like this… When you lose someone very precious, no one else can really know all that you feel. However, sometimes the many things our voices can’t find the words to say, our hearts can feel and understand. May thoughts of all Deb meant- of love she gave and of good times spent with her bring you peace and comfort and keep her close to you… We are thinking of you all, With love, Linda and Terry Presley

  8. Marya says:

Hello, I only met Deb a few times at conferences but she was a tremendous help to me in my work for the American Planning Association on healthy, active communities. Safe Routes to Schools is such an important idea and she was a great champion of it. God bless her and your whole family.

  9. jamie bussel says:

So very sorry for you all. Your strength, courage and commitment to Deb through this has been inspiring. I will always remember Deb’s energy , wisdom, and passion – what she brought to everything she did. She is somewhere up above, proud of all who will continue her legacy. I will not walk my daughters to school; look at a sidewalk; or smile at a walking school bus without thinking of Deb. Thank you for sharing her with the world. Its a better place because she was in it. With love and gratitude, Jamie Bussel

  10. Cheryl says:

One amazing journey ends, and another begins. The world is a better place because of Deb, and she lives on in so many people’s hearts. All the best to her loving family and friends. FYI- I was inspired by Deb to sign up for the donor registry, and the greatest chance for transplant success is for people between the ages of 18-44. Unfortunately, that leaves me out; so I’ll make a financial contribution instead.

  21. Elisabeth Thomas-Matej says:

Mary Lou, Andy, and Chris, I am stunned and cannot understand–even though, along with everyone else, I was fully expecting this news. I’m glad at least that Deb passed peacefully, surrounded by her brave and devoted family. I have tremendous admiration for your selflessness and dogged courage over the course of these harrowing two years. Lacking further words, I offer another song from the Sacred Harp Tradition. I hope these raw and open harmonies will give you solace and help you to feel some order in the chaos, or some grasp on the incomprehensible, which is the effect they have on me. As is traditional, the singers start with solfege to get their musical bearings, before continuing with two verses of (Christian) lyrics, which I will post below.

“163b ‘China’ – Second Ireland Sacred Harp Convention, 2012”

    Tune: Timothy Swan, 1801
    Words: Isaac Watts, 1707

Why do we mourn departing friends,
    Or shake at death’s alarms?
’Tis but the voice that Jesus sends,
To call them to His arms.

    Thence He arose, ascended high,
    And showed our feet the way;
Up to the Lord our souls shall fly,
    At the great rising day.
